Capital of the province of the same name, is called the ¨The Pearl of the South¨ and ¨The Beautiful City of the Sea¨. These descriptions come naturally from the true beauty of this city.
The city was founded in the second decade of the 19th century by French colonists, and their influence can still be seen in its carefully traced streets, mansions and eclectic elegance. Its buildings with domes, its parks, squares and monuments make of Cienfuegos a real summary of different architectural styles as the neoclassical, art nouveau and art deco. This universe of multiplicity of forms and colours give to Cienfuegos its site as part of the World Heritage, recognition given to it by UNESCO in 2005.
Cienfuegos is a marine city that zigzag a wonderful bay recognized as one of the best in the Caribbean for its dimension, depth and safeness. Traditionally Cienfuegos has been the site of some of the most prestigious nautical events of the country. Nowadays Cienfuegos hosts one of the stages in the annual Grand Prix for formula T1 speedboats. Divers love the exuberant seabed that surround Cienfuegos and there are several scuba diving centres in the near areas.
Location
Cienfuegos is located in the south of the central region of Cuba; its coasts are open to the Caribbean Sea. It limits to the north with the province of Villa Clara, to the west with Matanzas and to the east with Sancti Spíritus. Trinidad is just 60 Kilometres to the east.

THE HISTORIC CENTER
Declared as National Monument and part of World Heritage by UNESCO, the Historic Center is an exceptional urban complex of 90 hectares in which are notable impressive constructions, broad avenues and streets. Among their main attractions are:
Arco de Triunfo (Triumphal Arch)
The only one construction of this type in Cuba, it was erected in 1902 by workers of the community. 25 Street between Ave. 54 & 56.
Cathedral of Nuestra Señora de la Purísima Concepción
National Monument, built in 1819, it is remarkable because of the magnificent French stained-glass windows which represent the 12 apostles. 29 Street & 56 Ave.
Theater Tomás Terry
Inaugurated in 1890, it has been declared as National Monument. The theater preserve the splendor of its best times when great artists of all around the world acted in it, among them the famous Italian tenor Enrico Caruso. Ave. 56 between 27 & 29.
Ferrer Palace
Built following the most pure eclectic style, was open in 1918. In this beautiful building was lodged Enrico Caruso. Today is the city's House of the culture. 25 Street & 54 Ave.
Martí Park (Plaza de Armas)
This park is placed on the site on which was founded the villa (an incrusted stone on the explanade remember the foundation). From it were trace the first 25 blocks of the villa. From 29 Street to 25 Street between the avenues 54 & 56.
House of the founder
Residence of Don Luis D'Clouet, founder of Cienfuegos, built in the first half of XIX Century on one of the corners of the Plaza de Armas. It is one of the few constructions in Cuba that follow the most pure neoclassical style. Corner of 29 Street & 54 Ave.
Paseo del Prado
Longest avenue in Cuba and main artery of Cienfuegos. It extends from the same entrance of the city to the Malecón of Cienfiegos. On it is erected the bronze sculpture of the famous Cuban singer Beny More.
Boulevard
Together with the Malecón, the Paseo del Prado and the Martí Park, the Boulevard is one of the most frequented sites of the city. On it are located important commercial centers, restaurants, cafeterias and hotels. 54 Ave, from 37 Street to 29 Street.
Provincial Museum
Site of the ancient Spanish Club in front of Plaza de Armas. The museum shows archeological treasures of the Pre-Columbian period, documents, pieces of great value, ancient arms and testimonies about the life of important figures of this city. Besides, it has collections of decorative arts.
Reina Cemetery
National Monument, founded in1839. It has beautiful statues and is the only one in Cuba un which bodies were buried in vertical niches. 50 Ave. & 7 Street.
PUNTA GORDA AREA
Site of beautiful constructions and entertainments from the end of the XIX Century Nowadays, on this area are located some of the best restaurants, night clubs, hotels and private accommodations of Cienfuegos. In Punta Gorda you will enjoy the magnificence of buildings as:
Palacio de Valle (Valle Chalet)
Architectonic jewel of the XX Century. It is considered to be the most representative architectonic piece of the city. This splendid palace is a fascinating mixture of the Mudejar, Gothic-Roman, Muslin and Hindu Styles. 37 Street & 0 Avenue. Punta Gorda.
Club Cienfuegos
Open in 1920 as head office of the Cienfuegos Yacht Club. Is a two stories eclectic building crowned by two towers topped with wonderful domes. 37 Ave. between 12 & 14 streets, Punta Gorda.
AROUND THE BAY
Fortress of Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles de Jagua. Declared as a National Monument. Cozy Site filled of history and legend from which you will enjoy a nice view of the bay and the littoral area of Cienfuegos. Located on the area known as El Castillo (the castle).
In this area we recommend you to savor a wonderful lunch at one of the private restaurants at the shore of the bay (popularly known as "paladars"). The owners of these restaurants sometimes are not able to get a license to open a legal business anyway they open clandestinely their restaurants. The specialty in this restaurants is the seafood & Beach and dolphinarium of Rancho Luna.
Very near to the city of Cienfuegos is the Mountain Range El Escambray. We specially recommend you one of the most beautiful places of Cuba which is located in the heart of El Escambray. This place is named El Nicho.
